ZIANON PAZNIAK

Mr. Zianon Pazniak is the Chairman of the Belarusan Popular Front “Adradzennie” and the Conservative Christian Party – BPF. The main objects of his political activity are the complete liberation of Belarus from the neocolonialist oppression of the Russian empire, the unification of the Belarusan society on the base of the Belarusan culture and the free and democratic Belarusan state. Mr. Pazniak is a staunch supporter of the idea of the Belarusan national Rebirth formulated by the activists of the Belarusan national and liberation movement in the beginning of the XX century and realized in the independent Belarusan People’s Republic in March 1918 (occupied and liquidated by the Russian communist empire at the end of 1918). His political activity is based on the moral principles and on the Christian values, on the priorities of the freedom of nation, freedom of conscience, on the respect of the human and religious rights. He is the adherent of the market economy which secures to the economical subjects the freedom of the self-organization based on the priority of the private propriety.

Zianon Pazniak was born on April 24, 1944 in the town Subotniki (Iuye province, Grodna region) in the catholic family (his grandfather Jan Pazniak was a well-known Belarusan politician and Chairman of the party Belarusan Christian Democracy in the 1920-30s). He was graduated from the Belarusan Academy of Arts in Minsk, faculty of the art history in 1967. During the post-graduate course at the Institute of the Ethnography, Art History and Folk-lore of the Belarusan Academy of Sciences he investigated the history of the Belarusan theater. Zianon Pazniak is the doctor of art history.

Working at the Institute of the Ethnography, Art History and Folk-lore he protested against the suppression of the Belarusan language by the Soviet authorities and the annihilation of the Belarusan historical monuments. The authorities have used against him the repressions in 1974. Since 1976 he worked as a scientist at the Institute of History of the Belarusan Academy of Sciences investigating the late Middle Age in Belarus. Zianon Pazniak has directed the archeological excavations in Minsk, Losk and other historical areas of Belarus. He organized the defense of the historical monuments when the Soviet authorities tried to destroy them.

1988 he has organized and directed the archeological excavations in Kurapaty near Minsk. He has demonstrated the truth about this place to the Belarusan and international society: the Russian communist occupants had killed and buried in Kurapaty thousands of innocent victims in 1937-41.

Zianon Pazniak is the leader of the Belarusan national and liberation movement since the beginning of the Belarusan democratic raising in 1988. In October 1988 he has been elected the Chairman of the Belarusan Popular Front “Adradzennie”. In 1990-96 he was the MP and the leader of the fraction of the Belarusan Popular Front at the Supreme Soviet (Parlament) of Belarus. The Belarusan Popular Front and its parliamentary fraction under the leadership of Zianon Pazniak have achieved the most important objects: the truth about the Chernobyl catastrophe (hidden by the authorities), the restoration of the independence of Belarus in 1991 and the restoration of the Belarusan national historic state symbols – the White Red White flag and the coat of arms Pahonya. The parliamentary fraction of the Belarusan Popular Front has elaborated as well many laws creating the base of the independence and sovereignty of Belarus. 1992 the fraction under the leadership of Zianon Pazniak has elaborated the Conception of the economic development of independent Belarus (published in the newspaper “Narodnaya Gazeta” on April 16, 1992).

1996 the Lukashenka regime has started the brutal repressions against the democratic movement. The activists of the Belarusan Popular Front have received the information about the dictatorship’s plan to arrest and physically eliminate Zianon Pazniak. In March 1996 Zianon Pazniak has left Belarus together with the MP Siarhei Navumchyk. In one month he has returned to Minsk and directed the rally dedicated to the anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe. The authorities tried to arrest him. The special forces have surrounded and attacked the office of the Belarusan Popular Front in Minsk. But Zianon Pazniak has escaped from the surrounded office thanks the help of the Belarusan patriots. He has came to Ukraine, then acted in Czech Republic, Poland, Great Britain and then has been invited to the USA in order to participate in the political consultations. The government of the USA has given Mr. Zianon Pazniak the political asylum because of the information on the regime’s plan to eliminate him physically.

Zianon Pazniak is acting in the emigration in order to represent, defend and direct the cause of the Belarusan Rebirth, the independence and sovereignty of the Belarusan state and the democracy.

Zianon Pazniak is the citizen of Belarus and the Belarusan politician. He is the Chairman of the Belarusan Popular Front “Adradzennie” and the Conservative Christian Party – BPF. He is directing the activity of the structures of the Front and the Party meeting regularly the activists from Belarus. He is the author of hundreds of scientific articles as well as articles on the policy and culture. He has edited several books.
